Language

Dutch is the official language, but most locals speak English. You'll be able to speak English without any problems. 

Currency

The Netherlands is part of the EU and uses the Euro. Credit cards are widely accepted but cash is helpful for food carts and stalls.

The public transport system is efficient and widespread. Opt for an I amsterdam City Card for unlimited access during your stay.

April - May: Tulip Season

June - August: Popular tourist season, hotels book up fast and temps are warm

September - November: Cooler temps mean less crowds

This cultural destination is near many museums and just outside the City Center. This is the "swanky" part of Amsterdam.

Must Try

Stroopwafels - this unique waffle cookie is sandwiched between a sweet caramel-y sauce

Herring - this famous street food features salted herring served with onions. Be brave!

Tipping

Like most of Europe, tipping is not mandatory - that goes for taxis, restaurants, and bellhops. 

However, if you've had amazing service, you can "round up" or tip a few Euro coins.

Coffeeshops

Don't expect actual coffee at a coffeeshops - that's for cafes. If you're looking to indulge in cannabis, this is where you go. Expect to pay cash and don't be afraid to ask questions!

Budgeting

A reasonable budget for those opting for midrange travels (public transportation, casual restaurants, standard hotel) is €100-250 a day. Prices will vary depending on your preferences!
