Colombia
vibrant, colorful, adventerous
From the sun-drenched Caribbean beaches of Cartagena to the coffee-rich regions tucked away in the Andes, Colombia has something for everyone. Get in touch with nature, explore the colorful cities, and indulge in the local flavors of this vibrant and budget-friendly destination.

The Basics
Language
Spanish is spoken throughout Colombia with different dialects depending on the region. English speakers can get by in tourist-heavy cities, but you'll find varying degrees of usage.
Currency
Colombian pesos are the local currency and credit cards are accepted in more formal shops and restaurants. You'll find it hard to break larger bills - request small notes when exchanging cash.
Is It Safe?
Colombia is perfectly safe and one of the most friendly destinations I've been to. Street vendors are persistent but harmless. Use common sense but the country is very safe.
Main Cities
Cartagena is hot and coastal.
Bogota is the "big city".
Salento is temperate and in the Andes.
Medellin is the City of Eternal Spring.

Other Advice & Insights
Must Try
Cartagena serves up some of the best ceviche in the world. Even picky eaters should try it out.
Plantain chips and coconut rice are popular sides - be sure to order them wherever you go!
Change Please
When paying cash, you will have to ask for your change if you'd like it. The workers will otherwise assume it is a tip. When it comes to tips, it's either included or you can just add a US dollar or two.
Vendors
Tourism is a huge part of the economy and you'll see street vendors everywhere you look. While they are persistent and numerous, they are friendly. Just say no thanks and walk away.
Budgeting
Colombia is a very budget-friendly destination, making it perfect to get the most bang for your buck. Budgeting $75USD/day will get you a higher end trip!
