Paris

chic, iconic, and timeless

Ah, Paris. It has that jenesaisquoi that has captured the admiration of many. Often at the top of dreamy destinations, Paris is filled with world-class cuisine, quaint cafes, and charming luxury. We dive into a little more basic information on Paris below since it can be a tricky city for first time visitors!

The Basics

Language

French, the language of love, is the official language and spoken quite heavily. Even though many locals can speak English, they understandably prefer to speak French. Learn some basic phrases.

Currency

France is part of the EU and the Euro is used in Paris. Credit cards are widely accepted, but having cash is handy for small purchases, like an espresso or croissant.

Transport

Paris has a Metro, bus, and rail (called the RER) system that is easy to use and can take you anywhere. Traffic can be a pain so stick with walking (very easy to do) or public transport.

When to Visit

October - November: fashion season with cooler temps

April - June: Spring in Paris is so pretty

July - August: gorgeous weather but large crowds

Other Advice & Insights

How Rude!

Despite popular belief, Parisians are not rude. They are formal and reserved, which can come off as unfriendly - they aren't. Know how to say hello and thanks in French - it goes a long way!

Tipping

Gratuity is included in the bill by law. If your service was stellar, feel free to leave a few extra Euro - a few coins will do. You should also round up taxi fare and always tip your tour guides.

No Photos!

Taking photos all the time is frowned upon. Some stores straight up ban photos and it's rude to take pics of store merchandise. And PLEASE - don't stop traffic to take a photo by the Arc de Trimophe!

Budgeting

A reasonable budget for those opting for midrange travels (public transportation, casual restaurants, standard hotel) is €150-250 a day. Prices will vary depending on your preferences!

Paris Etiquette

DINING

Servers wait for your cue and won't stop by and check on you. Close your menu when you are ready to order and flag down the server when you need the check. Don't call a server "garçon", either!
