London

proper, charming, and elegant

As one of the oldest and most-visited cities in the world, London is a fantastic destination for travel newbies and experienced adventures. With iconic gems like Buckingham Palace and the London Eye, this city also boasts prim and proper streets, diverse food, and endless pubs to pop into for a pint. There's truly something for everyone in this royal city.

The Basics

Language

It goes without saying that English is spoke in London. However, know that some words are different in the UK versus America. For example, the bathroom is "the loo" and fries are called "chips"

Currency

The Pound sterling is used in England. Credit cards are widely accepted with the exception of Discover and American Express cards. Contactless payments are also becoming more popular.

Transport

London public transport is one of my favorite in the world. Oyster Cards will get you access to the tube stations, which are vast and cheap. Listen for the "Mind the Gap".

When to Visit

Charming all year round!

June - August: plenty of outdoor spaces will be open and the weather is best.

November - December: The lights won't disappoint!

Other Advice & Insights

Plan it Out

London isn't the best city to "wing it". There's so much to do and see and it's very spread out. Planning out your activities and routes will save you time and money. Take advantage of all the free activities!

Tipping

Most restaurant bills will include gratuity - if not, 10% is standard. Porters should get a pound a bag. No need to tip at pubs if you order at the bar, which is typical.

Dressing Up

While London fashion is a mixed bag, it's wise to dress "smart casual". Sneakers (aka trainers), flip flops, sweatshirts, and even jeans might get you turned away at decent pubs and restaurants.

Budgeting

A reasonable budget for those opting for midrange travels (public transportation, casual restaurants, standard hotel) is £85–200 a day. Prices will vary, but London is a pricier city in my experience.
