Berlin
historic, hip, artsy
A creative and cultural hub, Berlin is a special kind of cool. Explore its historical importance and get lost in the classic architecture - but travelers will also appreciate its fusion cuisine, modern buildings, and unique experiences. Many expats call Berlin home and for good reason!

The Basics
Language
German is understandably helpful, especially when reading signs. But Berlin is a top destination for expats, meaning English is widely spoken and it's common to find English menus.
Currency
Germany is part of the EU and uses the Euro. It's helpful to have cash - some metro stops and restaurants don't accept credit cards. Otherwise you can get by with a credit card most times.
Transport
The public transport system is efficient and widespread. Keep your ticket with you as plainclothes officers do random checks on rides. If you get caught, you can face hefty fines.
When to Visit
Oktoberfest: Two weeks starting the first day of fall
Mid-December - January: Explore the famous Christmas markets
Early June: Fewer crowds with good weather
Where to Stay

Mitte
Perfect for first-time visitors, it's in the heart of top attractions and museums. You'll find tons of shops and restaurants, too.

Prenzlauer Berg
Green spaces, food stalls, beer gardens, street performers, and art galore - this hip and cool neighborhood is amazing.

Friedrichshain
This former east-side neighborhood is great for budget or younger traveler. Nightlife, music, and great food are abundant.
Other Advice & Insights
Must Try
Currywurst is a Berlin staple - the spicy ketchup-y sauce is addictive. Vegan options available!
Beer Gardens are a must-visit! Enjoy a pint or two with pretzels to feel truly German.
Tipping
It's a faux pas to leave a tip at the table. Tell the server to keep the change when paying or indicate the total before they swipe your card. 10% for good service is a general norm.
Melting Pot
Berlin is home to a large Turkish, Thai, and Vietnamese population. Make sure to explore restaurants outside of traditional German fare - it'll be amazing and authentic! Berlin is also very vegan friendly.
Budgeting
A reasonable budget for those opting for midrange travels (public transportation, dinners with wine, standard hotel) is €100-200 a day. Prices will vary depending on your preferences!
