Vancouver

coastal, vibrant, and diverse

You'll be hardpressed to find another bustling city that's surrounded by a sparkling coast and soaring mountains. Vancouver is the perfect blend of nature and city hot spots. Whether you're planning on staying entirely in Vancouver or just starting your Canadian adventures here, you won't be disappointed in all this city offers.

The Basics

Language

You might find some French here and there, but for the most part, it's English everywhere. And yes - the Canadians are as polite as everyone says. Expect to hear sorry a lot!

Currency

The Canadian Dollar is the official currency, but some of the tourist-y shops accept USD (usually for a higher item price). Credit cards are widely accepted, even at food trucks and small shops.

Transport

TransLink is the public transport system and easy to use. You can pick up daily or weekly passes. The city itself is very walkable but spread out. Bikes and cars are easy to rent, too!

When to Visit

March - May: Rainy season, but not very crowded

September - November: Cooler temps and beautiful colors

June - August: Considered the high season, tons of events going on

Other Advice & Insights

Must Try

It's no surprise that a coastal city like Vancouver is known for its seafood. Try salmon and prawns - most restaurants are committed to sustainable practices!

The food trucks are top notch, too.

Tipping

Vancouver is fairly consistent with American tipping practices. It's normal to tip 15-20%, bump it up or down depending on the level of service.

Sorry!

Canadians are truly some of the nicest people you'll meet in the world. Reciprocate the attitude by smiling, engaging in small chat, and not cutting in line.

Budgeting

A reasonable budget for those opting for midrange travels (public transportation, casual restaurants, standard hotel) is $100-250 a day. Prices will vary depending on your preferences!
